Environmental fund launched to support communities to  tackle climate change

23 Mar 2026

Communities across Northern Ireland are being invited to take the lead in tackling climate change through a new Climate Action Seed Fund designed to support grassroots environmental initiatives.

Developed by the Community Foundation for Northern Ireland in partnership with The National Lottery Community Fund, the fund aims to support local organisations, community groups and charities to build innovative projects that protect the environment, reduce emissions, and build more sustainable communities.

Speaking  today  Orla Black, Director of Grants and Fund Development at the Community Foundation said:
“The Climate Action Seed Fund has been developed by the Community Foundation for Northern Ireland and The National Lottery Community Fund to empower grassroots organisations and changemakers to take the first steps towards meaningful action to launch transformative environmental projects.

“The challenges we face can often seem insurmountable, but real, lasting change begins at the local level. Small actions, supported by small grants, can create powerful impact and help us build a greener, healthier future for all.

“Local leaders and community groups are already taking steps to tackle climate change, whether by restoring ecosystems, reducing emissions, or promoting sustainable practices. But they often lack the resources, training, and support to amplify their work.

“That’s where the Climate Action Seed Fund comes in.

“We’re offering a way to support these changemakers directly, providing the resources and funding they need to launch innovative environmental projects that will create meaningful, long-term impact in their communities.”

Alison Fraser, Senior Head of Funding at The National Lottery Community Fund said:
“The Climate Action Seed Fund supports communities across Northern Ireland to deliver local solutions on climate, nature and sustainability. Environmental action isn’t just about the future; it’s about everyday life. When communities improve local green spaces or reduce energy use, the benefits show up in people’s health, household bills and sense of place. Thanks to National Lottery players, we’re proud to partner in this initiative.”
