Dig In and Grow: Acorn Farm’s ‘I Can Grow’ Programme Returns for 2026!

12 Dec 2025

The Acorn Farm Project is thrilled to announce the return of its popular ‘I Can Grow’ Programme for 2026. This hands-on initiative allows families and individuals across the Derry City and Strabane District to grow their own fresh, healthy produce at home – while learning practical skills and building community connections.

After 3 hugely successful years, with over 600 households already taking part, we’re now inviting 200 more families to join the next phase starting early next year. Whether you’re a complete beginner or already have green fingers, this programme is designed to help you grow your own food, live more sustainably, and enjoy the benefits of nature’s bounty.

Participants from last year shared incredible feedback:
Sharon, who homeschools her son Troy, said:
“The foraging was brilliant, I loved all the classes, they were fantastic, all stuff I like doing. Troy’s spuds came great! We had a great time with you all and made new friends.”
Sharon and Troy completed workshops in foraging, herbal teas, butterfly workshop, and more.

Donna shared how her son Jack, who has learning difficulties, thrived with his custom high grow box. His mum told us how Jack waited very patiently on his grow box as he was very excited to get growing. His box of vegetables looked amazing as he was out checking it every day, keeping his mum right.

Shauna Kelpie from Community Foundation for Northern Ireland, said:
“The ‘I Can Grow’ programme has shown us that small actions at home can lead to big changes. In 2026, we’re inviting even more families to join this journey and discover the joy of growing together. It’s practical, it’s empowering, and it’s a step towards a better future for everyone. We’ve seen families transform their gardens and their lives through this
programme, and we’re excited to welcome even more people to join us in 2026”.

Arlene Douglas, TCV Horticulturist said:
‘I am looking forward to being hands on with all the new Acorn Farmers in 2026 – it’s great to see people learning to grow food at home and I love supporting them through the whole ‘growing’ experience.’
